Needles, California: At around 12:30pm PT, a vehicle hits a child in front of Katie Hohstadt Elementary School on the 600 block of Cibola Street near D Street in Needles, California Monday afternoon.
San Bernardino County Fire Department, Baker Emergency Medical Services, and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department rushed to the scene of the accident.
According to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Kitchen, a mother with her two kids pulled up on the south side of Cibola Street parked along the curb to drop off her child off at the Head Start Program and well the mom was taking care of a baby, the mom let go of the her son’s arm for just a minute after dropping something and her son ran around to the front of the car, darted into traffic, and was knocked down onto the ground by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Cibola Street.
Witnesses say the driver in the vehicle that hit the child was driving under the speed limit at only 15 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour school zone and remained at the scene.
According to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Kitchen, the child was rushed by Baker Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Colorado River Medical Center with very minor injuries; scrape, bumps, and bruises.
The driving in the vehicle involved in the accident wasn’t at fault for what happen and wasn’t arrested or given a ticket according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Kitchen.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Kitchen wants parents to know to always hang on to your kids and teach your kids to always use the crosswalk.
