We Remember: The 1 Year Anniversary of Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami.

Japan: We Remember: The 1 Year Anniversary of Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami.

It was one year ago today, 2:46pm (Local Time in Japan) on Friday, March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake hits Japan. Many took to safety as the earth shook all around them; under tables or taking cover, many tried to get away from falling glass and broken windows as the earthquake shook Japan.

Videos of the earthquake started popping up onto YouTube just minutes after the earthquake showing buildings swaying over Downtown Tokyo, Japan and household items inside homes were thrown across the room during the earthquake.

But as the videos of the earthquake flow into YouTube, a man with his camera and a news crew in a news helicopter broadcasting live footage to NHK World News would capture one of the most shocking and tragic events witness on live television; a huge wave of water or tsunami was heading for the eastern coastline of Japan.

The big wave of water had already been caught on video hitting the port city of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture of Japan, by a man high up inside a tall building. The man in the video looks on as the tsunami wipes the seaport up and moves into town wiping out at the homes and businesses in its path. Many who were evacuated by first responders to safety lined up along the edges of hillsides as well as tall and sturdy buildings watching the wave wash everything they ever worked for away.

The huge wave of water would next set its course right into the coastline near the Capital City of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture of Japan.

A news crew inside their news helicopter captures the huge wave of water as it hits the areas around the Capital City of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture of Japan, swallowing up everything in its path from trees and cars, to farmlands, houses, and two story buildings.

At one point, the camera pans to a house with people loading up into their van and truck as the wave is just seconds away from hitting their home.

As the news helicopter came around a plume of smoke caused by the huge wave of water washing buildings and power lines away causing some buildings to explode in a mix of fire and water, the van and the truck that people were loading up their belongings had already been washed away, off the road, and into the farm fields of dark and muddy water.

The huge wave of water hits Sendai Airport with many people inside the airport and rushing to higher ground or to the roof of Sendai Airport as the wave of water surround the airport. Some of those stuck inside Sendai Airport had cameras and captured on video the huge sea of water washing away cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, bicycles, buses, helicopters, and airplane from there taxiways.

The huge wave of water mix with the large earthquake that occurred earlier that day would cause next a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant that would take the lives of four workers and make recovery efforts in the communities around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant which even more tougher because some of the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant had exploded bring fears of radiation poisoning.

Many stayed away from the communities around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant because of the fear of radiation poisoning which caused more than 160,000 residents to be displaced from their homes.

The tsunami wave would than move across the Pacific Ocean hitting along coastlines around the Pacific Ocean including the coastlines of Hawaii, Oregon, and California. Some areas along the states of Hawaii, Oregon, and California did have some damage occurred to low line areas as well as boats inside coastline harbors.

More than 15,854 people were killed and 3,155 people were missing on that tragic day. Those numbers may change as some continue to count and update the numbers on the deaths.

More than 340,000 people are living as evacuees in temporary housing in the 3 hardest-hit areas of Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, and Fukushima Prefecture of Japan.

The tsunami destroyed and damaged more than 370,000 houses and buildings as well as wiping out large areas of farmland, roads, railways, and seaports

As the 1 year anniversary of that tragic Friday, March 11th, 2011 day arrives, please take a moment to remember those who lost their lives that tragic day.

Our Thoughts, Our Hearts, and Our Prayers To The People of Japan Who Were Affected By The 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami In Japan.

May we all remember and give thanks to those first responders who evacuated many people out of harm’s way and risked their lives to save others as well as those brave nuclear power plant workers who worked hard to prevent a much bigger disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

May we all give thanks to the many people around the world who donated goods, money, and their time to help those affected by both the earthquake and the tsunami.

Please continue to help our friends and neighbors in Japan rebuild their lives as well as their communities.
