ZachNews Reporter Zachary Lopez Takes A Look Back on the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.

Today is the 18th Anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake.

On January 17th, 1994 at 4:31am PT; a strong magnitude 6.7 (Early reports was reporting the earthquake magnitude at 6.6) shook up Northridge, California and the Los Angeles, California areas out of the early morning sleep.

60 people were killed, 7,000 people injured, 20,000 people were homeless, and 40,000 buildings were damaged in the earthquake.

Collapsed overpasses closed sections of Interstate 10 Santa Monica Freeway, State Route 14 Antelope Valley Freeway, Interstate 5 Golden State Freeway, and State Route 118 Simi Valley Freeway.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey; the estimates cost of damage from the earthquake is between $13 and $20 billion U.S. Dollars.

I remember as a kid being waken up out from a nightmare of an earthquake to being in an earthquake.

The dark room in the dark night shook all around me and that sound of the building shaking was so scary.

When the earthquake stopped, I remember hearing the fire department trucks and police cars outside driving down the street.

I will never forget that Monday morning day and all those who lost their lives that day. I will also never forget all of those first responders and neighbors all came together to save lives that day.

Please take the time to prepare yourself and family for any disaster like an earthquake by putting together a First Aid Kit and a plan for what to do before, during, and after any disaster such as an earthquake.

Please give thanks to your local first responders who are risking their lives every day to save others.

Your local media outlets will be there to help provide you and your family with important information if when a disaster like an earthquake happens; ZachNews and media outlet friends in the Colorado River Tri-State area are here for you the people, working for the people and will be there to help you and family stay safe.
